CALM Advisory Board Meeting May 10, 2017

Ronis, Kai Stoeckenius
Issues discussed in the meeting:
Many/most of the items relate to needing to improve communications with UC bureaucracy.
We still lack a definitive roster of team members.
We are lacking clarity on how funds generated by team dues and spring meet proceeds are disbursed, and how/if
such funds may be used further the program’s (CALM) ends.
Tiffany’s contract renewal has not been forthcoming in a timely fashion; complete payment of last years contract has
yet to happen.
RSF lifeguards have been missing shifts at CALM workouts—for example last Sunday’s long course workout—with
The CALM assistant coaches are paid less than UC life guards and far less than assistant coaches at other masters
Not all CALM swimmers are registered with USMS. A major consequence of this is that insurance coverage
provided for workouts by USMS is not in effect (they require all swimmers to be covered). We need to clarify what insurance coverage is available in the absence of USMS insurance.
We need to find a more effective way to communicate about these issues with RSF Aquatics and UC in general. This might be achieved by:
- Broader distribution of emails from the team/coaches to RSF Aquatics.
- A face to face meeting with Brigitte and Spencer, preferably including Tiffany and 1-2 other board members.
Our next meeting is May 29

• Coaching – Lifeguard Requirements?:
Tiffany has a 10 am meeting with Brigitte and Spencer on Wednesday May 31.
the meeting with Tiffany.
Ben Swiggett agreed to also attend
The point of the meeting is to clarify UC Berkeley policy regarding the required number of lifeguards on deck during a CALM workout, and how compliance with this policy affects coverage under UC insurance of any incident that may occur. (Note: While USMS provides insurance for Masters workouts, this is void because CALM (at UC’s insistence) does not require USMS membership of all participants, which voids the USMS insurance).
Questions raised and discussed:
Would it count if CALM has lifeguard certified people in the pool, swimming the workout?
If they need to be on deck, would UC pay one of our team members to fill in?
If RSF Aquatics knows that one of the scheduled lifeguards will not show up, is it not their responsibility to find a
• Coaching – Assistant Coach Pay
Assistant Coach Geof Thomas has resigned to take another job. This leaves Jeremy Cohen as the only regular
assistant coach. The CALM assistant coaches are paid $15.50/hr. compared to lifeguards at $18.00/hr. Assistant coaches for other USMS teams in the Bay Area are paid between $25 – $40.00 /hr. The discrepancy in pay makes it difficult to recruit and/or retain assistant coaches.
Questions raised and discussed:
Can we get the pay rates raised?
Can we reduce the number of workouts so that the Head Coach can cover all?
Can we raise funds and pay assistant coaches ourselves, independently of UC?
Can the increase in dues be used to increase assistant coach pay?
Proposal: The Board will write a letter to Brigitte expressing concern over the assistant coach turnover as a
consequence of the pay rate.
• Board President:
Conny has a new job and will no longer be able to spend the same amount of time or energy on CALM issues. The
Board decided to reduce frequency of face-to-face meetings to every other month. Issues requiring more immediate attention can be handled via e-mail/texting, or an ad-hoc after workout meeting at the Blue Door is possible.
• Spieker Pool :
The pool will be closed for re-plastering and other repairs mid-July through August 20; alternative arrangements
for the mid-day workout TBD.
- Membership Chair Scott Adams has made a presentation to the Oakland Tri-Club.
- An alternative location for the summer membership meeting and potluck is being considered, due to the frequently cool and foggy conditions at Strawberry Canyon. No date or location was set for the next meeting.CALM GOALS FOR 2017
- Greater participation in meets
- Greater participation in open water swims, including Maui Channel
- Find way to identify CALM swimmers, tent (E-Z Up) or T-shirts
- Determine uses for our revenue (all meet revenue and revenue collected from visiting swimmers)
