• Over 35 CALM swimmers including your editor and at least a couple of guests from other teams braved inclement weather to participate in the initial CALM Long-Course Workout on the morning of Sunday, January 8. Given the conditions and the fact that this was the first one, the event can be deemed a significant success, and portends well for even greater attendance at future long-course workouts to be held every other Sunday at Spieker pool. The next one is set for January 22, with a social gathering at the Durant Cafe after. Y’all come on out! It’s a great workout and a good time, rain or shine.

- A team goal for this year is increased participation in swim meets and open water competitions. With this in mind, here’s a reminder of some upcoming opportunities to help us achieve that:
- ⁃ January 29- USMS one-hour swim 8:30 to 10:00am at Spieker pool. Please bring your own timer/counter. We will only offer one heat of this, so plan to arrive by 8:30 to warm-up for 15 minutes before we start officially at 8:45am. If you would like to do a 1650 for time, you may also do so on this day. Bring your own timer/counter, as well. If you want to register for the official postal competition: https://www.clubassistant.com/club/ meet_information.cfm?c=1308&smid=8216
- ⁃ February 4-USF Valentine’s Affair meet, “Koret Center, University of San Francisco.
- ⁃ February 11-Albany Splash and Dash Sprint Pentathlon (50yd events in fly, back, breast, free; 100yd IM, 200yd medley relays), Richmond Swim Center, 4300 Cutting Boulevard, Richmond, CA 94804. Registration info at: https:// www.clubassistant.com/club/meet_information.cfm? c=2390&smid=8448
- ⁃ March 19-CALM Spring Meet!! Come and help make our Meet a success! Sign up to swim and volunteer to work at the Meet.
- ⁃ April 7-9-PMS Short-course Yards Championships at Soda Aquatic Center in Moraga.
- Stroke clinics are back! To prepare you for these and other meets and swims, CALM will, once again, offer clinics on the following Sundays — Feb 12 (Free and Back), Feb 26 (Breast and Fly), and March 12 (IM/Starts/Turns, and breakouts). Come to all three, or any that address your needs. Fee will be $15 for CALM members ($30 for non-members). Spencer is working on the registration link now, and we will post it for you once it is up.
• Heard around the pool…
- ⁃ Brrr!! If you’re thinking it’s been a tad cold on deck this month, think on this: a couple (at least) of your teammates took part in so-called ‘polar bear swims’ this season. Leo Lozano and Marcel Kristel plunged into the icy waters of the North Sea on New Years Day in Scheveningen, the Netherlands; and expat CALMer (we still claim her) Jenny Frost participated in the Veldener Neujahrsschwimmen in Velden am Wörthersee, Austria. She appreciated that the lake was not frozen over.
- ⁃ Two long-time CALM stalwarts will be undergoing surgical repairs early in this year: Dave Duveneck (hip) and Kate Coleman (shoulder). We wish them a speedy recovery, and look forward to their return to the pool. No doubt they’ll quickly be as good as new—or better.
- ⁃ Happy news for CALM swimmer and coach Jeremy Cohen and spouse: they’re expecting!…a first grandchild that is. Here he is practicing (borrowing one of former CALM swimmer and Membership Chair Colin Moss’ twins as a stand in):
