Hail and farewell
- Our esteemed coach Tiffany’s departure is the last thing any of us would have wanted…but it did give us a reason for not just one, but two farewell parties (Tiffany was unable to make the first one). Both were held at the Rare Barrel , courtesy of co-owner and CALM swimmer Alex Wallash, who generously treated the party to a taste of their sour beers.

Members in the news..It’s been awhile since the last Waterlog, and we don’t want to neglect catching up with some of the accomplishments of our teammates in the interim.
- CALM was well represented at the Keller Cove open water swim way back in September of 2017, especially on the distaff side where Deb Kory garnered a first in her division in the 2-mile, as did Alice Jones and Linda Williams in the 1-mile. Not to be outdone, Michael Kellman took a first in his 1-mile wetsuit division (and 3rd overall–well done, Michael). Allison Athens took 2nd in her division of the 1-mile, and Izzy Mayer swam to a 3rd in his of the 2-mile. Also, Lauren Cetlin swam in the half-mile wetsuit competition. A great turnout for this local swim, with some terrific results!
- Joan Martin held down the fort at the Alan Liu Memorial SCM Meet, September 24, swimming the 50yard back, breast and free, as well as the 100IM and garnering two 2nds, a 4th and a 3rd respectively. Impressive swimming, Joan!
- David Swofford was the lone CALM representative in the Santa Rosa Masters Resolution Meet on January 20 of this year. He swam the 50, 100 and 200yard freestyle events in his division, and finished in the top 5 of each.
- Oh, and then there was another event (non-swimming) where we were well represented…
Molly Curley O’brien, Tryn Kaleel and Izzy Mayer at the Women’s March in January, 2018. All we can say is: CALM women rule!!
Time to rally the troops…
- Just because we find ourselves leader-less for the time being, is no reason to let our profile in the Master’s swimming world diminish. Here are some up-coming events that present opportunities to prevent that. Let’s go and make a splash (so to speak)! You can find details of these and other events in the Pacific Masters Update here.
- First, and of course foremost, there’s our own CALM Spring Meet, scheduled for March 25 (a Sunday) at Spieker. We need as many of you as possible to swim and/or volunteer to make this event the smashing success we have become accustomed to it being. To do the former (swim) you can go here; you can volunteer for timing, set-up, clean-up, etc. at the meet by signing up ______, or e-mailing volunteer coordinator Kendall Young
Here’s a graphic of the cap we’re giving away this year! Participate and get one!! - Coming up right quick is the Splash and Dash Sprint Pentathlon on Sunday, February 17. This event, sponsored by the Albany Armada Masters debuted last year (your Editor swam it). With only 50yard races in each of the strokes plus 100 IM’s, it’s fast paced, it’s wild, it’s fun…and it’s over in a hurry! The venue is a beautiful new facility, the Richmond Swim Center, which has a sliding glass roof. You can register here.
- Missing the Winter Points Challenge? How about submitting swims to a couple of postal swim competitions open until the end of February: the USMS 2018 1-Hour ePostal National Championship, and the TAM 2018 Postal Mile for Lung Cancer.

- And finally, here’s an opportunity to learn how to “give back” to swimming: learn how to teach others to swim. USMS is hosting their Adult Learn-to-Swim Instructor Certification Course, right here on the Berkeley campus at Hearst Gymansium on March 24. There are only 25 slots for this course, so if you are interested, don’t hesitate. You can learn more here. Breaking news: you may be able to implement your new skills as part of $5K grant Rec Sports was recently awarded to sponsor adult learn-to-swim classes.
